“He (Jesus) poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet” John 13:5
I love a good action movie, and near the top of the list is the Academy Award winning film, Gladiator staring Russell Crow. Set in the height of the Roman Empire, Crow is a soldier betrayed by those in power and living in the shadows among coliseum gladiators. When he finally comes face to face with Ceaser who betrayed him, Crow brings forth one of his most powerful scenes on film, as he says, “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next”. While we feel empowered in seeking revenge,
Jesus Washes Feet.
Think about it. When Jesus washed the feet of the disciples, He did not leave out Judas, the man who was about to betray Him. Jesus knew this was going to happen, and yet He washed Judas feet, anyway! I find this incredibly comforting that even in my mistake prone life, Jesus never changes. He’s still washing feet. Understanding this helps me have that much more compassion for those who hurt me in life. In those times when revenge may be your “feeling”, let “prayer” for those around you be your action.
