Wilderness

“…Who led us through the wilderness…” Jeremiah 2:6

The wilderness looks different every year. In some years we find ourselves in the health wilderness, and other times the financial, and still others the relational. Each have their unique thorns and parched earth to deal with, but they all seem to bring on the clouds of depression. In our minds we will find a dimly lit corner and there we sit, playing and replaying an endless loop of whatever trouble or turmoil we are going through. When Jeremiah reminds us that God led His children through the wilderness, the key word is “through.”

Through, does not = stay

There are a myriad of verses in scripture that talk about God’s children being led through the wilderness. Yet they did not stay in the wilderness, the moved through it, with a purpose to find a place of promise. No journey is easy and there are challenges along the way, but with God leading, you are not alone.

Three Answers To Prayer

Jesus said, “Thy will be done.” Matthew 6:10

I have to admit that I love a good western, and my wife and I found ourselves binge watching the series “1883” staring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill over the holidays. Once completed we dove right into the next chapter of this fictional “Dutton family” drama with the series “1923” staring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. Yet last nights episode caught me completely off guard. The narrator came forth with the words, “God provides three answers to prayer;

Yes, Not Yet, & I Have A Better Plan For You.”

There is so much truth laden in this quote it’s hard to put into words. Looking back over my life God has never said “no” to something I prayed for. For what man would interpret as God’s “no” should more correctly be summed up as “I have a better plan you.” Living out the words of Jesus when He taught us to pray “Thy will be done” is not always easy in the moment, but becomes easy when you live out a lifetime saying these words. Give it a try, and not just for a day or two. I can promise you that living your life asking God to be in control is the most satisfying and fulfilling life you can lead.

Let It Go

“Forgive one another…Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:13

We do not let go easily, yet the apostle Paul said in Colossians 3, “Bear with one another…” and sometimes that’s just what we have to do. We have to “bear through” the situations or attitudes or hurts that others cause us or put us in. We have a unique ability to hurt others, and an even more unique ability to hold on to that hurt. The words “I forgive you” do not easily cross our lips, at least not with out a fight. Elton John captured the sentiment so well when he sang,

“Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word.”

Christ forgave us as he hung on a cross, saying, “Father forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” Pay it forward today. Let go of your hurt and forgive someone.

Jesus Secret Meetings

“I pray for them…that they may be one as We are…” John 17:9-11

Stop for one minute of your busy day and realize that Jesus prays for you. That’s right, the one who died for you and rose for you still prays for you. Think about it. Jesus went off to pray often and most of the time we do not know the content of those prayers. But one particular prayer gives us a clue into Jesus secret meetings with God. In that secret meeting Jesus spent His time praying to God for us. Thankfully,

Prayers Do Not Have A Lifespan.

They are still working on your behalf to this day. To think that the Savior of the world is praying for us is a mind bender for me. His prayer was simple yet powerful, that we would be one as He and the Father are one. Unity, what a concept, and really just a decision we need to make, perhaps on a daily basis. I’d never really thought that I could be the answer to Jesus prayer, but I’ve changed my mind. I’ve decided to care more about those I meet along life’s journey, yes even those who seem not so easy to like, let alone love. Perhaps John and Paul (the Beatles, not the Apostles) gave us all a great roadmap song to get stuck in our heads: “All you need is love.”

Hug From Heaven

“Those who dwell in the secret place of the most High shall dwell under the shadow of the Almighty” Psalm 91:1

The news came suddenly the morning that mom called. My father had passed away in the night at the rather young age of 68. I was already married at the time, with two little ones running around the house, but that particular morning there was a pall of sadness and disbelief that shadowed my mind. Through tears my wife and I headed to the car to make our way to mom’s place and I remember thinking, “God, where are you this morning? The words were just beyond my lips when I felt a flood of peace wash over me that I could not explain. I had just received,

A Hug From Heaven.

The hug was all too familiar as it washed through me, for this was not the first time. Simply speaking the name of Jesus will bring the hug often. I’ve had a lifetime filled with them. So can you. When our thoughts turn toward God, in a moment of sincerity, you are now dwelling in the secret place of the most High, and you are covered by the shadow of the Almighty. And that’s just the beginning.

The Worry Trap

God said, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine.” Isaiah 43:1

Is life, absent fear, possible? I’ve reviewed the Bible cover to cover, and one thing that continues to amaze me is how many times the topics of “fear and worry” appear. God repeatedly says, “Fear not”. And yet our response over and over seems to be, “Nah, thanks but, I think I’ll worry anyway.”

Fear and Worry Will Steal Your Hope

Nothing in life is simple I’ll grant you that. However, our minds are amazing creations capable of all kinds of choices. Why not choose to believe the promises of God? These promises come embedded with something called courage. You could very well surprise yourself in the days to come. Jesus said “fear not”. Why not take him up on his offer.

The Unexpected

God said, “For I know the plans I have for you. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

I have met so many people who have spent a lifetime creating long term plans. They subscribe to what I call the Yogi Berra mantra, as this famous New York Yankee once said, “if you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up someplace else”. Amazingly, I know plenty of folks, myself included, who knew exactly where they had planned to go in their younger years, and still ended up someplace else!

The Unexpected Shakes Hands With Everyone.

As time passes I have found myself spending less time trying to craft long term plans and more time waiting on the Lord. Everyday is a day to celebrate what God has planned, even when we don’t know exactly what those plans mean for us, or how we fit into them. We just have to trust God’s promise that his loving plans for us are just what we need, right when we need them. The key is to be ready and willing when God brings His plans to your door. For As Avery Heibert once said, “I wasn’t planning to lead. I was just standing in the back when everyone turned around.”

The Divide

“Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

A friend is going through some very difficult family struggles. We’ve all been there. One thing is true throughout history is that everyone has a mind and makes choices that will inevitably hurt someone else along the way. However unintentional, or many times intentional, the pain is very real. In times like these we have a very simple faith decision to make. Do we believe in God’s promises or would we rather live with the struggle?

Jesus Said, Come To Me, Let Me Carry That Burden For You.

This promise from Christ is indeed thought provoking, and a compelling promise from God. I took Him up on this promise years go and started turning over to Jesus all the burdens which I cannot solve on my own. Some days that list is rather long. I promise you, Jesus won’t mind how long your list is. He made a promise and He will fulfill it. You simply have to trust that He will.

Who holds your New Year?

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” John 8:12

There are many ways to approach life and we spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out how to live ours out. The world will give you a thousand and one ways in which you should live, eat, love, work, sleep or not sleep, but in the end the life you live is really up to you. Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple Computers, said, “Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” You hold a new year in your hands, to do with what you so desire. The question of the hour is, how do you want to use it? For me, I have tended to make very poor choices when I’m not connected to my Creator, for I have learned a valuable lesson in life: “I just don’t know what I don’t know.” After all, so much of life is a mystery, then throw eternity into the mix and it all becomes even more confusing. So I

Marvelous Things

God said, “Call to me and I will answer you and show you great and marvelous things that you do not know!” Jeremiah 33:3

Imagine what God will do for you if you would simply do as he asks. “Call to Me” God is saying. After all, we tend to search high and low for answers through friends and counselors and the internet, but fail to call upon the One who can actually provide the answers we seek. Yet when we do, God promises to go above and beyond, saying, “I will answer you and show you great and marvelous things that you do not know!” The choice is yours if you want to

Tap Into The Greatest Power In The Universe.

Yes, God has actually given to you this incredible choice. In other words, the next move is your call. Perhaps it’s time to start calling. It’s not complicated. There is no secret formula or exact phrasing to be used. God will not be impressed that you memorized the way someone somewhere put a lyrical poetic prayer together. Just speak from your heart. You have Him on speed dial by simply opening your mouth. If you’re not sure what to say, try starting with something like, Ok God, I know you’re there. Here I am. I’m available. What do you have in mind for me today? Acknowledge that He is there and open the door to a conversation. God will answer, and show you great and marvelous things that you never dreamed possible.
