The Long Ride

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” Matthew 21:9

Today is Palm Sunday, so named as it commemorates Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, as a cheering crowd lays down palm branches to carpet his path, and shouts, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” Yet for Jesus, this is one long ride. This ride begins what we now call ‘Holy Week’, leading to Christ crucifixion. For the crowds that day, it was a celebration, a coronation. For Jesus, He knows what He’s really in for. He knows the pain that’s about to cross his path, and still,

Jesus Took The Ride, Anyway

Why, you may ask? Because it was the only path available. That’s how much He loved you, and that’s how much He loved me. If you’ve ever walked a lonely and painful road for another, you know what this kind of love means. Today, commemorate and celebrate the ride that Jesus took by simply saying, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.”

Seasons

“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

King Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, may have written the words, “To everything there is a season”, but in 1965 the singing group The Byrds introduced them to pop culture in their song “Turn, Turn, Turn”. Their musical adaptation caught fire just as the Viet Nam war was taking the lives of young men and Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech was still resonating for positive change in society. Solomon’s words are as true today as when he wrote them thousands of years ago. For everything there is indeed a season. So, that begs the question today,

Care To Change Your Season?

Scripture tells us over and over and over again that we can change our seasons. We’re not stuck unless we want to be. Don’t believe me, then press rewind and read through the 100 or so daily devotionals in this blog. Jesus said, “I have come that you may have life and have it abundantly.” I don’t know about you but I’ll sign up for that. Care to join me? Reach out in faith today because Jesus also said, “with men it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Wonder

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” Isaiah 64:4 (and repeated in 1 Corinthians 2:9)

I don’t know about you but I love programs that go into syndication on television. Some have said great television programming is never lost as they will always return to us in reruns. “I Love Lucy” probably started the trend, and I’ve lost count at how many times I’ve laughed at her “Vita-meata-vegamin Girl” bit. The point is, when something is repeated it’s because there is great value stored up just longing to be appreciated. We find that today in the word from Isaiah who said that we have no clue about,

All The Wonderful Things God Has In Store For us

Paul understood this and emphasized it again in his letter to the Corinthians. God has demonstrated incredible power and creativity and beauty in His creation, and His incredible love for us by sending His Son to demonstrate His love toward us. I can only imagine what incredible things He yet has in store for you and for me. That’s why in Faith, everyday, I believe the best is yet to come.

Command

God said, “concerning the work of My hands, you command Me” Isaiah 45:11

Throughout my lifetime I’ve heard it said often, there is power in prayer. Yet, have you ever stopped to think how seriously God takes prayer? To God, prayer is not just something he asks in hopes that we will do it. No, God takes prayer so seriously that He actually says, “Concerning the works of my hands,

Command Me”

Unfortunately, it is us who do not lift prayer to this level. If we truly understood the miracle working power available at the tip of our tongue, we would never stop praying. Perhaps that the answer. Paul understood this for he was the one who said, “Pray without ceasing”. Are you ready for a miracle? Start praying, and don’t stop.

Peace

“Pursue peace with all men.” Hebrews 12:14

In our society peace comes with conditions, a price to be paid. Perhaps the greatest price paid is when we pursue peace without conditions. Without expecting anything in return. There is a reason Jesus said in Matthew 5:9,

“Blessed Are The Peace Makers

For They Shall Be Called Children Of God”

Peacemaking is not easy, but rather one of the hardest things in life. Most of the time peacemaking requires forgiveness on our part, especially when justice or revenge is our natural reaction. Perhaps that’s why Jesus so prominently mentions forgiveness in the Lords prayer by asking us to “forgive those who have sinned against us”. Peter once asked Jesus, “how many times do I forgive my brother when he sins against me?” Jesus answered, “70 times 7”. That’s a lot of forgiveness my friends, but many times that’s the price of peace.

Live Today

“Seek first the kingdom of God…and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33

Entire industries are devoted to trying to predict the future. The stock and bond and commodities and housing markets probably top the list, not to mention sports gambling and never ending political election seasons. We are a society enamored with the future, so much so that it shapes and overshadows living today. Jesus addresses this topic head on in Matthew 6 where he instructs us not to worry about tomorrow, for today has enough troubles of its own. The plain truth is,

We Worry Because We Want Control

Jesus said, seek first the kingdom of God and all that we worry about will be taken care of. The prescription for kingdom living is actually fairly simple. “Love the Lord with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself”. Strive for this every day then watch how the needs you spend so much time worrying about suddenly get taken care of. That’s how God’s promises work. He instructs, we follow, He fulfills his promises.

Heartlight

Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before all, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in heaven” Matthew 5:16

In 1982 a little film called “ET – The Extra Terrestrial” took the world by storm as a lost creature with a glowing heart from another planet was rescued by children determined to help him find his way back home. If you haven’t seen the film, put it at the top of your list. Soon after the films release, the amazingly talented Neil Diamond gave us an extraordinary song “Heartlight”, singing, “turn on your heart light, let it shine whoever you go,

Let It Make A Happy Glow For All The World To See”

When Jesus says, “let your light shine,” He means just that, give love and friendship freely. Let joy radiate, so much so that it become contagious as others feel the sincere warmth radiating out of you. Be a happy glow today, for all the world to see.

The Flower and the Mountain

“How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all” Psalm 104:25

Over the past few years I’ve become a bit of a YouTube scavenger, specifically enamored by programs which involve the building or making of things. From gravity defying skyscrapers to aircraft to microchips, the handiwork of the human mind continues to amaze me. Simple raw materials repurposed into something new. Yet with all of our collective wisdom we still do not understand what makes a heart beat or the mysteries of the human mind. We look at God’s creation and gaze in wonder at how the mountain, and the delicate flower that resides on its slopes, we’re made. And what’s more, even in these things, scripture tells us that there is a purpose for everything in creation, for

In Wisdom, God Created

Throughout Psalm 104 David reminds us of the incredible works of the Lord, and that in wisdom he made it all, including you and I. Indeed, we are his handiwork, each of us extraordinary in our own way, and designed for a purpose. Amazing to think that while you may be as delicate as a flower, God has given you the ability move mountains. For as Jesus said to us in Matthew 17, “If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed you can say to this mountain move, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible to you.”

Linked In

Jesus said, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” John 15:7

A water glass isn’t much good until you pour something into it. One could argue that some water glasses are artistic and ornate simply sitting on a shelf, but their appeal as visual art is limited at best. It’s not until you,

Infuse A Glass And Something Wonderful Happens

Think of yourself as an empty water glass, so when Christ says, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you”, He’s simply saying let His words fill you up and something remarkable will happen. Christ says, “Do not fear!” So…fear not. Christ says, “let your light shine.” So…shine brightly for all to see. Christ says, “love your neighbor as yourself”. Do that and you’ll change your world. Living out such a faith comes infused with a promise. “Ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you”.

April Fools

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said.” Genesis 3:1

There are actually multiple and conflicting stories about the origin of April Fools Day, dating as far back as ‘The Canterbury Tales’ of 1392. Regardless of its origin, my father loved this centuries old tradition of pulling harmless pranks on friends and loved ones. My first taste of this was as a twelve year old by receiving a 4am serenade of “Oh Susannah” on his harmonica to wake me out of a sound sleep. Yet, of all the amazing pranks in history, the best one was described well by French literary figure Charles Baudelaire who wrote,

“the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist”

You’ve probably noticed already that I’ve not focused on Heaven vs. Hell per se in these posts. The way I look at it, why focus on the darkness when the light is already so much more powerful. Just think, a closed suitcase is very dark inside, but crack it open, even less than an inch, and light will flood in. Faith is setting your focus on God, and simply believing that He is. When you do, the darkness doesn’t stand a chance.
